Espresso vs Lungo: How to Choose Your Cup Size

    Cup size matters

Choosing coffee involves both flavor and water volume. The official Nespresso Original guide lists 40 ml Espresso and 110 ml Lungo. Umami suggestions are variety-specific starting points, not universal rules for every coffee.

    Start with your capsule’s recommendation

    Umami varietiesRecommended volumeOther product suggestions
Classic, Colombian, Brazilian, Caramel, Cardamom, Anise, Decaf40 ml20 ml more concentrated; 110 ml lighter
Crema and Saffron110 ml40 ml more concentrated

The 20 ml option is an Umami suggestion for a more concentrated experience, not an official definition of ristretto. Cup volume does not change how many capsules are in the box.

Change one thing at a time

Start with the recommended volume, taste it, then change only the water quantity for your next preparation. Compare the results to find your preference. Consult your machine manual before changing its programming and use a fresh capsule for each coffee.

    Frequently asked questions

Are lungo and americano the same?

No. Here, lungo means a longer preparation through the capsule; an americano adds water to a prepared espresso. We do not claim they taste identical.

Does more water mean more caffeine?

Volume and intensity ratings do not let us calculate caffeine per cup. We do not publish quantities without product data.

Which Umami varieties recommend a longer cup?

Crema and Saffron list 110 ml as their recommended volume.

Do these capsules work with Vertuo?

No. They are for domestic Nespresso® Original. Check compatibility.
